Description

I had initially photographed this target a year ago because it looked like a cute Monkey-Head.

However in further reading I've discovered it is a very active little star forming nursery of dense emmission Nebula in the Orion Constellation.   The image unveils a collection of carved knots of gas and dust in a small portion of the Monkey Head Nebula (also known as NGC 2174).   Newly formed stars of cluster NGC2175 shine brightly around the left eye and cheek bone, illuminating and heating the cloud to create the glowing gas of the nebula. Radiation and stellar winds from the region’s hottest stars eat away at the low-density gas of the cloud, often making tall pillar-like structures.

This image attempts to highlight these pillar structures, especially around the "eye and bridge of the nose extending through the chin area" as well as in the area of the back of the head or flowing hair.  Dense gas is generally opaque to visible light, appearing dark and relatively featureless in such images. Particularly striking in this image are the small, finger-like prominences scattered across the gaseous landscape. The bright edges show where the stellar radiation is being absorbed, and thereby outline the dense pocket of potential star formation.

The core of the nebula is semi-transparent containing Oiii gas, revealing stars both within and behind the gas cloud.  In the background, many distant galaxies can be seen across the image.

NGC 2174 is located about 6,400 light-years away in the constellation Orion.

This image contains 298 subframes of 300s exposures taken during December '21 and January '22 with an ASI071MC camera and Radian Ultra Quad-Band Filter on a Skywatcher Esprit 120ED telescope riding a SkyWatcher EQ6r Pro equitorial mount.  Image acquisition using APT with PHD2 guiding.
