Description

After attempting this large spiral at f10, I wanted to frame it in the context of the Virgo cluster. My f3.3 reducer provides a wider field and faster focal ratio, which are clearly evident, although greatly limited by the small chip in my OSC.

The level of detail in NGC 4216 is both impressive - with obvious dust lanes and flocculation , and deceptive - are we looking at it from the bottom, or the top, or both? The soft glow at the core, mesmerising, like an eye - perhaps this is how it draws in its 'victims', being a notorious 'galaxy killer'. At 40+ million LY, looks can be so deceiving!

I must try this again at f10, but will need long exposures and steady guiding to retain this level of detail. With mid-summer approaching, time is running out for these Spring galaxies, I may have to wait until next year to 'catch it's eye' again.
