Description

In the constellation Cassiopeia is a bright emission nebula, NGC 281, commonly called “Pacman Nebula.” In the center of the nebula is a star cluster, IC 5090, whose young, hot stars are generating intense solar winds that are sculpting channels and pockets in the surrounding gas and dust. Along the perimeter are a collection of Bok globules, as well as a large dust cloud that forms a dark slash into the cloud.

Collecting the data for this image was frustrating. While I was fortunate to have a string a clear nights, the quality of the sky made for very uneven HFR values, ranging from 1.8 to 4.8 within the course of six hour sessions. In total I captured nearly 30 hours of data, but employed only about the best 17 hours for this image, data with of HFR 2.8 or less. I created a master luminance with Ha, OIII, and SII data whose HFR was 2.3 or less.
