Description

We had a great view! Our decision to abandon Texas in favor or Arkansas was a good one. We had high clouds during the partial phase, but we could still see the sun through the clouds with our glasses and my binoculars. The clouds completely cleared before and during totality, which was amazing. The eerie gray that preceded totality came with crickets turning on their night mode chirping and the air getting refreshingly cool. Then, totality everything was dark and we could see Venus and Jupiter hanging out next to the sun. We could see a prominence (solar flare) with the naked eye. A bright red spot on the bottom of the sun.  Through the binoculars we could see the whole right side of the sun lit up with beads of light and red, looping flare. We could see the wispy white finger-like extents of the sun’s corona (outer atmosphere) reaching in all directions. Truly amazing. I’m glad we got good conditions.

I brought along just a simple setup for photography: one DLSR and tripod.  My goal was to witness as much of the eclipse, and not spend it all fiddling with equipment.  Mission: accomplished.
