M27 dumbbell nebula in narrowband

I was hoping to get an image of M20 the triffid nebula, which has a short window from UK at this time of year, and never very well placed - it remained obstinately hidden behind my neighbour’s wall. As I was set up for f3 using my dual narrow band filter, and M27 was high in the sky, it was an obvious target.

This was my first ‘in vivo’ test of my TEC cooler, which started off well, reducing the camera temperature from 12.5 (ambient 10.5) to 3 Celsius - at some point during the 40m imaging run the power supply (a 240v/12v DC converter) failed, and the camera returned to 11 Celsius by the end of the session. I expect that my attempts to keep it dew-free caused it to overheat, and now popping fuses!

Despite these set backs and some light wind, I’m quite pleased with this image, although the vignetting is more pronounced than I remember at f3.3 - I could try a slightly shorter imaging train to see if this helps. Anyway it was just good to be out after weeks of cloudy nights in UK, and the rest of the week is looking even better... I shall reposition my scope and try for the elusive Trifid...

Description: A slightly softer, cropped version, with less sharpening and deconvolution. I tweaked the gamma settings to develop a little of the outer halo, without introducing excessive noise, and the colour to bring out the ionised oxygen envelope. HST images show yet another outer ring or coronet of expanding, presumably super-heated, HII emissions, which may be beyond amateur instruments.

Looking forward to re-imaging this detail in LRGB with my 'new' DSI III pro, with longer exposures, and twice the FOV at f10
