Description

This image of the Flame Nebula (NGC2024) uses the same data as used for a previously finalised picture of the broader Horsehead Nebula region in the Orion constellation. The image underwent further processing to suit this specific target.

NGC2024 is very bright due to ionised hydrogen gas within the nebula energised by ultraviolet radiation emitted by the nearby star, Alnitak. Alnitak has been omitted from the image to avoid distraction.

The picture was formed by combining individual images taken with two cameras. The QSI683 WSG-8 camera was used to image ionised Hydrogen (Ha), the QHY10 one-shot colour camera was used to take RGB images.

Capture details, already provided for the wider area picture, are as follows:

RGB (QHY10): 2hrs 30 mins = 15 x 0600s, bin 1x1, Temp = -10c

Ha (QSI683 WSG-8): 2hrs 00 mins = 10 x 0720s, bin 1x1, Temp = -20c

The image was fully processed in PixInsight. Ha data was blended with the Red channel of the RGB image to form a single HaRGB picture.
