NGC2467

Experiment aim, to test the asymptotic limits of a commodity image acquisition platform set up with minimal site calibration and quite ordinary site conditions. This test image is taken with drift PA done on an Eastern star only, with an illuminated 12.5 mm Plossl. Az adjustment based on iphone and some knowledge of the site. The target is set favorably to the PA i.e. in the East with approx. Az 105 degs, Alt 24 degs. Scope set inside the house, facing a window glass pane, resting on floor boards with some flexure. OTA is NON-EdgeHD with stock 6.3 FR (effective FL 1280mm). Focus acquired manually with APT liveview (no Bahtinov mask or other aid used). The image has some cropping done to eliminate the telescope circular edges and some bringing out of details with GIMP and Affinity.

The test showed the central 33% of the image is generally coma free with rounded stars for subs up to 1-minute exposure plus 10s wait for vibration settlement (per exposure). Thus using a smaller imaging sensor would give higher performance/price ratio. FL of up to 2000mm can be used in light polluted suburban skies. 1-minute unguided may be a viable alternative, to guiding, in such conditions.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.
Promotions by Reviewers When 3 distinct Reviewers promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for IOTD status.
Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection. If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
