A GLOWING CYGNUS LOOP (SHO) - Sharpless 103

The Cygnus Loop (Sharpless 103) is a large supernova remnant (SNR) in the constellation Cygnus, an emission nebula measuring nearly 3° across. Some arcs of the loop, known collectively as the Veil Nebula or Cirrus Nebula, emit in the visible electromagnetic range. Radio, infrared, and X-ray images reveal the complete loop.

The supernova remnant was shot here in Northern Arizona under Bortle 2 skies in mono (SHO). The Cygnus Loop has a lot of glowing Ha data (mapped green) in the integrated image — which looks very prominent and seldom seen.

This image was taken over the span of several evenings, totaling over 20 hours of data acquisition.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
