Description

So what is causing these distortions in the galaxy NGC 1316 seen here ? Is it the smaller galaxy NGC 1317? NGC 1317 is more than 100,000 light years away from NGC 1316 and is probably too small and too far away to cause the distortions and swirls in NGC 1316. The complex dust lanes visible also indicate that NGC1316 is itself the result of a merger of galaxies in the distant past. These are some of the many mysteries which abound in space, making astro-imaging such an exciting genre of photography.

The data was acquired by Martin Pugh at the Obstech Remote Observatory in Chile. It was quite a challenge to bring out all the dust lanes and details in the core and my patience was tested for sure!!
