Description

When imaging with narrowband filters, one of the most common color palettes is SHO. We astrophotographers rarely stray from it, and when we do, it’s usually because we only collected Ha and Oiii data. In those cases, we would likely use the HOO palette. Today, I would like to show you that there are so many other combinations that are begging to be experimented with. Not of all these work well with every deep space object, but the California Nebula seems to be a good candidate for all of them.

From left to right, top to bottom: HOS, SOH, OSH, OHS, SHO, and HSO. For consistency, I used the same processing steps with each palette, aside from some variations with tweaking the star colors.

This data was collected in September and October of 2020. It’s been so cloudy lately here in Ohio, so I’m working through old data and trying to be creative. Hope you enjoy this one!
