Description

Just a couple minutes of steady seeing conditions during an otherwise unremarkable morning was enough to catch a reasonably sharp image of the ringed planet.

A few months ago we picked up our 24" F/4.2 Starmaster dobsonian telescope south of Fort Worth, Texas. This telescope's main purpose is for visual astronomy at star parties, but having such a large aperture makes planetary imaging difficult to resist with nearly 3x the light-gathering power of our EdgeHD 14. It was a stellar performer at the Texas Star Party in May but work was needed on the tracking and goto system to make it fully functional. After replacing the Velcro strip lining the altitude bearing for the motor to engage with and sending in the outdated tracking system for a hardware and firmware upgrade, we had a big dob that can aim and track across the night sky. Unfortunately, the new Velcro wore down after a couple weeks so we'll need to make some adjustments to the scope to make using it for imaging sustainable.
