Description

This wide field image captures both the Flame Nebula (NGC 2024) and the Horsehead Nebula (Barnard 33) found within Orion's Belt.  The imaging took place over two nights (1/13 and 1/14) for a total of 204 images.

ithe data was processed as an LSHO/ForaxX palette.  

I have also included an image that is cropped to focus on the two primary nebula, excluding most of the surround dust/nebular clouds.  I like the wide field image the best because it does show that surrounding detail.  Let me know which you like better!

The Flame Nebula is an emission nebula approximately 1500 ly from Earth. Its emissions are driven by the bright star Alnitak in Orion's belt, whose intense UV emissions activate the large hydrogen clouds found there.

The Horsehead Nebula is a dark nebula within the Orion molecular cloud. It is known for its distinctive horse head shape and is approximately 1375 ly from Earth.

Alnitak makes this a challenging target both to image and process due to its brightness relative to the nearby nebula.  To retain the details of the nebula clouds, even in the dimmer regions withouit completely blowing out Alnitak and a wide region around tests both equipment and image processing skills.  The Curse of Alnitak is a reference to the bright and large halos that can afflict this image especially from internal reflections within filters.  Oiii filters are particularly suscpetible to this, so this object is ofthen the target of companies/individuals seeking to determine how good their equipment is (or isn't).

Update:
I reprocessed this a bit with the goal of retaining/enhancing more of the dim cloud surrounding these two nebula.  I also shifted the color palette a very small amount by using the new SHO ForaxX script tool that is now available for PixInsight.

I also tamed Alnitak a little bit, reducing it slightly compared to the previous version.  Nothing is ever "perfect", but this is much closer to my vision for this image.

Just cropped the image to give the Nebula the prime focus.  The wide field view is still here, but I thought this cropped version a bit more dramatic.

From Wikipedia:The Flame Nebula, designated as NGC 2024 and Sh2-277, is an emission nebula in the constellation Orion. It is about 900 to 1,500 light-years away.The bright star Alnitak (ζ Ori), the easternmost star in the Belt of Orion, shines energetic ultraviolet light into the Flame and this knocks electrons away from the great clouds of hydrogen gas that reside there. Much of the glow results when the electrons and ionized hydrogen recombine. Additional dark gas and dust lies in front of the bright part of the nebula and this is what causes the dark network that appears in the center of the glowing gas. The Flame Nebula is part of the Orion molecular cloud complex, a star-forming region that includes the famous Horsehead Nebula.At the center of the Flame Nebula is a cluster of newly formed stars,=10.5px 86% of which have circumstellar disksX-ray observations by the Chandra X-ray Observatory=10.5px show several hundred young stars, out of an estimated population of 800 stars. X-ray and infrared images indicate that the youngest stars are concentrated near the center of the cluster.

The Horsehead Nebula (also known as Barnard 33) is a small dark nebula in the constellation Orion.  The nebula is located just to the south of Alnitak, the easternmost star of Orion's Belt, and is part of the much larger Orion molecular cloud complex. It appears within the southern region of the dense dust cloud known as Lynds 1630, along the edge of the much larger, active star-forming H II region called IC 434.The Horsehead Nebula is approximately 422 parsecs or 1,375 light-years from Earth.  It is one of the most identifiable nebulae because of its resemblance to a horse's head.

The nebula was first recorded in 1888 by Scottish astronomer Williamina Fleming on a photographic plate taken at the Harvard College Observatory.  One of the first descriptions was made by E. E. Barnard, describing it as: "Dark mass, diam. 4′, on nebulous strip extending south from ζ Orionis", cataloguing the dark nebula as Barnard 33.
