NGC 7023: The Iris Nebula

The Iris Nebula (also known as NGC 7023 and Caldwell 4) is a bright reflection nebula in the constellation Cepheus. The designation NGC 7023 refers to the open cluster within the larger reflection nebula designated LBN 487.The nebula, which shines at magnitude +6.8, is illuminated by a magnitude +7.4 star designated HD 200775. It is located near the Mira-type variable star T Cephei, and near the bright magnitude +3.23 variable star Beta Cephei (Alfirk). It lies 1,300 light years away and is six light-years across.

This one has been challenging to pull out the details of the dark nebulae. My light frames were acquired during a period of high haze caused by smoke from the Canadian wildfires in June of 2023. I'm not sure, but I feel that the haze has contributed to a lot of noise in the darker areas of the nebula, making it harder to separate nebulosity out from the background noise. I performed multiple Dynamic Background Extractions on this image, both in RGB and Luminance. Adding more sub exposures does not seem to significantly improve the final image in this case.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
