Description

A nova appeared in Hercules 12th of juni, nova V1674 Her. I took a spectrum of it and compared it to the other nova that is in the sky now, nova V1405 Cas.

The spectrum looks a little different then the nova in Cassiopeia. It has much higher emission peaks. If I am not mistaken that means that there is more gas involved.

Also the emission lines ar much broader. again, if I am not mistaken, this means that there are strong stellar winds, blue shifting and red shifting the emission lines which makes them wider.

in nova Cas there are clear P-cygni profiles which are not in Nova Her. A P-Cygni profile is the combination of an emmision line with a dip in front of it. Such a profile indicates that there is material coming toward us at high speed (blue shifted) which absorbes the light.

I checked with other amateur specroscopists about the emmison profile around 4640 angström because it is not in nova Cas. It is mixture of Helium and nitrogen emission lines which are close together and blend at this resolution.

Nova V1674 Her was recorded with 30x120 second exposures when it was at magnitude 10.0.

Nova V1405 Cas was recorded with 30x60s exposures when it was at magnitude 7.8

Both recorded with a Skywatcher 150/750PDS on HEQ5 mount and QHY294M camera. I used a 100 lines/mm difrraction grating (SA100 from Paton Hawksley)
