Description

This was an experiment: after carefully calculating my optimum sub-exposure lengths using the formula proposed by Robin Glover is his YouTube presentation: Choosing the right gain for Deep Sky imaging with CMOS cameras I decided to stop imaging for 120 or 180 seconds and use 30 and 60 second exposures. There is some margin for error in the calculation but using his method I calculated 24 seconds to be my optimum sub-exposure length with my ED127 scope, Optolong L-Pro filter, ASI294MC Pro at unity gain, and Keller Texas Backyard Light Pollution.

PixInsight's SubFrameSelector reported SNR weighting to be almost the same for 30s and 60s frames, with 60s frames being marginally better. I also integrated 64x60s frames and 128x30s frames as a comparison (same integration time) and found that the 30s integration looked much cleaner (less noise) than the 60s equivalent, which was interesting!
