Description

On the night of 23 August 2023 I watched how Jupiter and Ganymede's shadow danced together and put up a show. So I decided to try and capture this game of follow from start to finish. The top moon is Io while the one below is Ganymede.

The time span of this phenomena was approximately a bit more than 2h, which started at 21:40 UT and finished at 23:45 UT on 23 Aug 2023. Since the seeing was a favorable 8/10 and a medium transparency of 6/10, I could squeeze decent details out of this project, considering that the first capture took place when Jupiter was at only 17 degrees high and gradually climbed to 39 degrees at the very end. Was very interesting to observe how details on the surface of the planet got better and better defined by the time it climbed higher on the sky.

This animation is made up of 64 individual video captures, 60s each, with no generated/interlaced frames in between. Each of these captures were stacked in AutoStakkert and polished in Registax. Due to the field rotation induced by my alt-az mount, I had to manually align each frame in Photoshop until I got the above result, which is scaled to 125%.
