Description

This was the first "Not a Comet" catalogued by Charles Messier. This is one of the brightest super nova remnants in the sky. The star that created it is thought to have exploded in 1054 AD. The nebula is about 6500 light years from Earth and is about 10 light years across. It is expanding at a rate of about 600 miles a second. The nebula contains a pulsar that produces the glow that can be seen in the nebula's center.

I captured this data over 11 nights from January 9, 2022 to January 29, 2022. I captured an additional 3 hours of luminance data that I did not use in the processing. With the advent of the AI tools from Russ Croman and the use of 1x1 binning and drizzle integration, there really wasn't much additional detail to be gained from the luminance data.

I tried to process this to approximate "true color". In addition to the RGB data, including the stars, I mapped the narrowband data as follows:

NB Filter   Hue
Ha             351
OIII            200
SII             360

The processing was done with Pixinsight, while the processed data from the various filters was blended together using Photoshop. Next time I might try the new ImageBlend Script for Pixinsight

As always, my thanks to Adam Block and his excellent tutorials for guidance and inspiration. I used a flow similar to Adam's processing of NGC1491.

Description: This is the same data, but processed with the narrow band data mapped to Red = Ha, Green = SII, Teal = OIII instead of closer to their true colors.
