Messier 38, also known as the Starfish or PI cluster (German: Seetern) is located about 2750-3480 light years away. M36 and M37 are often mentioned together with M38. The cluster contains more than 100 visually visible member stars spread over an area of about 15 light years. With an age of 290 to 320 million years, Messier 38 is still a very young star cluster. It is located on the outer edge of the local Milky Way spiral arm, also known as the Orion Arm.
