Description

This picture showcases a mesmerizing array of astronomical objects in a relatively small field, in the constellation of Puppis. The open clusters M46 and M47 are the main subjects, complementing the scene with the planetary nebula NGC 2438 and the open clusters NGC 2423 and NGC 2425.M46: this open cluster is about 5,400 light-years away, with an apparent magnitude of 6.1; it spans an area of 27 arc minutes and contains about 500 stars, making it a relatively bright and large object.M47: located 1,600 light-years away, this cluster has an apparent magnitude of 4.2 and a brightest star of magnitude 5.7, making it visible with naked eye; it is a young cluster, estimated to be about 78 million years old.NGC 2438: this planetary nebula is approximately 2,900-3,000 light-years away, so it seems to be not physically linked to M46; it features a bright inner ring surrounded by a more extended and diffuse halo of gas, spanning over 4.5 light-years in diameter.NGC 2423 and NGC 2425 appear as relatively small clusters, since they are further than M46 and M47.
