Description

IC 5146 is a nebula which contains three different types - absorbing, reflecting and emitting components. It is the eastern most part of a very large darkcloud, Barnard 128 which at its closest part to the solar system is only about 500 LJ distant and at the location of the IC5146 about 3000 LJ. B128 is most likely an area of potentional star creation because it is a molecular dust cloud, a Bok-Globule. The central star of the nebula is part of a small star cluster and it is responsible for the ionisation of the surrounding H gas which radiates the primary Ha lines.
