Description

With its tightly wound spiral arms and patchy structure, NGC 2841 in Ursa Major is a classic example of a flocculent galaxy (the best known example of this type being, of course, M63). Located about 46 million light years from us, NGC 2841 is the fourth brightest galaxy in Ursa Major. With a diameter about 50% greater than that of the Milky Way, NGC 2841 is something of a galactic behemoth. It is surrounded by a large halo, produced by outflows from giant stars and supernovae. Of the latter, four have been observed in the galaxy in the last 100 years or so: one each in 1912, 1957, 1972 and 1999.

Galaxies this small are not well suited for my scope-camera combination, so processing images like this always poses something of a challenge for me. I am always tempted to eschew any software binning and to crop the image in such a way as to highlight as much detail in the galaxy as I can. Almost invariably, however, some combination of poor seeing and less than optimal guiding renders such an approach impossible, and that was the case here. (This time, my guiding was great, but the seeing not so much.) For this image, the approach I have taken has been to bin and crop the image with a view toward highlighting some of the numerous, faint, distant galaxies that inhabit this portion of the sky. Of particular visual interest, I think, is the collection of galaxies near the right edge of the image (at the 3 o'clock position), and the irregular barred spiral near the lower right corner.
