Description

The Vela SNR is the remnant of a massive star that exploded around 12000 years ago, towards the end of The Stone Age. It spans approximately 8 degrees by 8 degrees, which is about 16 times the apparent diameter of our Moon. Shockwaves have yielded a variety of complex shapes with associated nicknames.

I am currently part-way through building a backyard and mosaic of this amazing region. Until then I have processed sample data generously shared by Telescope Live via a trial membership. Data was acquired by Martin Pugh at the Heaven's Mirror Observatory in Yass, NSW, Australia.

The image has been rotated ~90 degrees counterclockwise, with North being to the left of screen. This framing gives me the impression a raging inferno with smoke rising to the upper-left.

@Gary Imm has provided an excellent annotated image and description of the region here.
