Description

Wolf Rayet 23 (WR 23), the bright blue star in the centre of this field (also catalogued as HD92809), is a massive star (30-40 times the mass of our Sun) located in the southern constellation Carina, about 5,900 light-years from Earth. It is surrounded by a bubble-shaped structure that is created by intense stellar winds blowing off WR 23's outer layers of gas. The bubble is estimated to be around 10 light-years in diameter, expanding at a rate of about 60 kilometers per second.
WR 23 is much hotter than our Sun (about 100,000 kelvin compared to the surface of our Sun at around 5,500 kelvin) and consequently about 2 million times as luminous.
