Description

I shot the Wizard Nebula with the Celestron C8 Edge HD and Starizona Hyperstar using the ASI294mcp camera. The Hyperstar v.4 turns the C/8 into a light gathering beast at F 1.9 so in the area that I live next to the Rocky Mtns it's been a valuable asset for my astrophotography. But there are some caveats to be aware of.
The first issue that I had is the ASI294mcp camera in regard to taking flats. The camera requires a flat exposure of 2 secs or greater. That required me to build a light box that not only dimmed to a low enough value but could seal around the dew shield as to minimize light leakage. I used a neutral auto window tint to over the screen plus a diffuser to make it work. Next, I had to address any light leakage so, I would normally take the flats and dark flats in the evening, in the dark and finally tape the led off on the back of the camera.
The second issue I have is with the Starizona Hyperstar unit itself. It took me a bit to get the collimation process down not realizing that I really had to much space between the adjustment plates. We have large temperature changes during the night, so the expansion and contraction of the unit allows the screws to become loose. Now I keep tighter tolerances and start with the unit snug without gap to start. My unit is really close to collimation without any gap, so it is easy to tweak into collimation.
The Hyperstar really has its place, but for sure I wouldn't use the 294mcp. To be clear both Hyperstar and ASI 294 MCP are high quality pieces of equipment, but I will someday add the 533mcp as the Hyperstar's camera of choice.
TO BE CLEAR, I am an amateur astrophotographer so please understand this is my opinion only.
