Description

Sh2-119, also known as Clamshell Nebula, is a large and diffuse nebula in the constellation Cygnus. It was fairly unnoticed but recently it is becoming more popular in the astrophotography community, with several top notch photos being published lately.
It features a large Ha region but also a fairly bright Oiii one around 68-Cygni, a hot blue giant star transitioning to supergiant. This type O star is surrounded by a ring shape nebula, likely a Strömgren sphere (a structure also seen in the Rosette nebula). The highly energetic UV radiation emitted by 68-Cygni lis the Ha clouds around, rendering this 3-D look of Sh2-119.This area also has other structures like Bok globules, LDN dark nebulas and right on the left of 68-Cyg, a small planetary nebula PK 87-3.1.
