Description

The Jewel Box is an open cluster in the constellation Crux 6,419 light years from Earth. At magnitude: 4.2  it is very pretty at the eyepiece or through binoculars and  can be seen naked eye. The brightest stars in the Jewel Box cluster are supergiants, and include some of the brightest stars in the Milky Way. It is one of the youngest known clusters with an estimated age of 14 million years.
It was named by by John Herschel when he described its telescopic appearance as "...a superb piece of fancy jewellery"
