Description

NGC 1097 (also known as Caldwell 67) is a magnitude 9.5 barred spiral galaxy measuring roughly 9', and lies about 45 million light years away in the constellation Fornax.

NGC 1097 is listed as #77 in Hilton Arp's catalog of peculiar galaxies, under the category "Spiral galaxies with small, high surface brightness companions in arms". This small companion is NGC 1097A (visible here in the top right of the main galaxy), a peculiar elliptical galaxy that orbits 42,000 light-years from the center of NGC 1097, an interaction that is causing obvious tidal debris and distortions in its larger companion.
