Description

ere is my image of the lovely ( and lonely) galaxy NGC 2903 located in the constellation of Leo.

I have been planning to capture this galaxy for almost a year since I first heard about it and tried to frame it in Telescopius. It was a perfect size for the deep deep deep sky rig, namely a Celestron 11 inch SCT scope with a 0.7x reducer for a focal length of 1960mm with an APS-C size sensor the ASI 2600MM and MC.

I first took some monochrome images (for more detail) back in April and finished off some colour images, this past May weekend.

NGC 2903 is a lonely galaxy because it is an isolated barred spiral field galaxy A field galaxy is a galaxy that does not belong to a larger galaxy group or cluster and hence is gravitationally alone. A barred spiral galaxy is a spiral galaxy with a central bar-shaped structure composed of stars

It was discovered by German-born astronomer William Herschel, who cataloged it on November 16, 1784. The little fuzzy in the images is irregular dwarf galaxy KKH 51 which appears to be a companion to NGC2903.
