Description

Also known as the Knife-edge galaxy, this galaxy is ~50 million light years distant. In deep exposures, a large looping tidal stream is present. I get a good hint of that very faint tail in raw data, but after processing, it's just too faint to remain.

I went after this object to try and capture the tidal loop, but didn't manage to get enough data. I consider this a work in progress, and will return to this object again (and again if necessary) until I image those loops! In the mean time, this object has given me a new appreciation for how delicate "non linear" post-processing can be. Just pulling the dust/gas up in the spiral's arms and accentuating the core was more of a chore than usual (it is only a splinter of a galaxy after all).

The data were captured at the TAAA CAC dark site in southern AZ in May 2021, and combined with data captured at home in 2023.   Additional frames were collected in Arizona (CAC) in 2024.

Description: SPCC, BXT, and GHS processing, plus a slightly tighter crop.

C

Description: More integration time. I can see the tidal tails in the raw data, but I can't seem to retain it after processing. Darn!

D

Description: Another attempt at the tidal tails by exposing almost 2x, but without much luck. To stretch to the outer tidal tail loop gives up so much of the intricate core of the galaxy that I prefer to defer until a much deeper image can be taken, and then probably do an HDR blend. This attempt still yields a nice galaxy core and seems better than my original, so I'll keep it.
