Description

The Owl Nebula (also known as Messier 97 or NGC 3587) is a starburst (planetary) nebula about 2k ly away, it is found in Ursa Major.  It is composed of three concentric shells, with the outermost shell being about 20-30% larger than the inner shell.  The inner shell is not circularly symmetric, which gives it the owl eyes appearance.  The white dwarf at its center is approximately 14th magnitude.

This image was captured in Bortle 7 skies (backyard) using an Esprit 100 with an Antlia ALP-T filter and a Canon T3i DSLR (w/HA Mod) on an EQ6-R Pro mount.

Data was captured over 3 nights with 202x240s lights = ~13.5 hours of integration time.

M108 was also captured in the field of view, but the narrowband filter only shows the strong HA with a hint of the O3 in a couple spots.
