Description

The Antennae Galaxies, also known as NGC 4038 and NGC 4039 are found in the constellation of Corvus.  (Also designated Caldwell 60 & 61).  These interacting galaxies are displaying a starburst phase creating rapid star formation due to collisions of dust and gas.  The long tails of these galaxies produced through gravitational tidal distortion give them their distinctive name.  They are thought to be at a distance of about 45 million light years.
