Description

The Whirling Dervish nebula is located about 14,000 light years from Earth, and is one of the largest and brightest regions of H(II) in the night sky.

The core of the nebula is lit up by over 3,000 young stars, only around 2 million years old. Infrared observations of the nebula have shown over 200 stars with protoplanetary discs.

This image was taken over 4 nights in Bortle 6 skies from Perth, Western Australia. Mapped to the Hubble palette (SHO) with RGB stars.
