Description

20210609 - NGC 6992 The Veil Nebula - Planning and execution

What was the experience

Heaven is with us this night 🤩 40 subs vooraleer de morning glow er weer aankomt. Genoeg als een goede start …

[EN] Had first planned to finish the “unfinished business” with North America & The Pelican. However, when setting up the rig, I noticed what the reason was for the severe Dec-drift-off the night before. With 45deg Dec, the camera is hitting the tripod. Didn’t want to bother changing the setup/orientation, so decided on another object with slightly lower Dec: The Veil Nebula. Looked up the coordinates on telescopius, the frameing for the camera and went at it. Everything manually correctly pointed with the iOptron SkyGuider Pro, and managed to get the frameing near exact like planned (Dec doesn’t have any fine-tuning, so this is small ticks and squeezes to get it right) 300s subs, and the tracking stayed spot-on, less than 1.3” deviation. Heaven is with us this night 🤩 40 subs before morning glow comes along. Enough for a decent start …

NGC6992 - Veil Nebula - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Veil_Nebula

Quote: “The Veil Nebula is a cloud of heated and ionized gas and dust in the constellation Cygnus.

It constitutes the visible portions of the Cygnus Loop, a supernova remnant, many portions of which have acquired their own individual names and catalogue identifiers. The source supernova was a star 20 times more massive than the Sun which exploded between 10,000 and 20,000 years ago. At the time of explosion, the supernova would have appeared brighter than Venus in the sky, and visible in daytime”
