Description

Located some 1,400 light-years away from Earth, the Iris Nebula’s glowing gaseous petals stretch roughly 6 light-years across.

This beautiful, blushing blue nebula is unique amongst its counterparts in the sky. Many of the nebulae visible in the night sky are emission nebula — clouds of dust and gas that are hot enough to emit their own light and radiaition.  The iris Nebula on the other hand, is a reflection nebula.  The color of this nebula color comes from the scattered light of its central star, which lies nestled in the abundant stars fields and clouds of dust and gas of the constellation Cepheus.

In the lower left corner of the frame,  another smaller reflection nebula known as the Ghost Nebula (Sh2-136) seemingly looks on.....admiring this beautiful cosmic flower from afar.

This is one of two images captured concurrently the same night using my dual scope rig.
