Description

M101, the Pinwheel Galaxy, was discovered by Poerre Méchain in 1781. It is around 25 million light years from Earth in the constellation Ursa Major. The galaxy is 170,000 light-years across, nearly twice the diameter of the Milky Way and is estimated to contain at least one trillion stars. The galaxy’s spiral arms are sprinkled with large regions of star-forming nebulae within giant molecular hydrogen clouds. Brilliant, young clusters of hot, blue, newborn stars are seen along the spiral arms [1]
