Description

Copeland's Septet or Hickson Compact Group 57 discovered in 1874 by the Scottish astronomer Ralph Copeland.
The distance of the Septet is about 431 million light years.
He also went on an expedition in 1874 with Lord Lindsay the later Duke of Crawford to Mauritius to see the Venus transit.
The transit Theodolite they used is to be seen in the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh.
