Description

I took a series of "stitched" Milky Way panoramas at the beautiful Muir Trail Ranch (which is just off the John Muir Trail) on the nights of July 20-24, 2019. The panoramas were taken with a tripod, my Fuji XT-2 and a 14mm f/2.8 lens, simply by leveling the tripod, and shooting a series of images horizontally overlapped. I believe this shot is a series of over 10 (not stacked) 20s exposures at f/2.8.

The ranch was quite marshy that week.  I waded through the marsh going pretty much the length of the developed part of the ranch, finding spots to place my tripod and capture panoramas. There was about a 2 hour stretch where the Milky Way was at the right altitude, and I did this for 2 or 3 nights. The cabin lights were a real issue (I had no control over them, and they were way too bright). I needed to severely process those parts of the image to balance the brightness with the sky. However, at least they nicely lit up the cabins and trees!

You can read more about the shooting here,  and see my full album here. The bright "star" on the right of some of the images is Jupiter.
