Description

20210824 - no rain: Yes .. no clouds: Yes .. Clear Skies: Yes .. Full Moon: NOOOO 😱😳🙄 !!!

What was the experience
So … there I was … all ready and set to shoot DSO nebulae 🤩 … and because of a slight haze of clouds, the sky was lit like a white-screen 😳 because of the moon 🌝
I had to switch targets, as even with the filters, the subs were all washed out 🙄 I’m waiting to see if the processing will salvage any of this.
But, at the end of the night, I made a mug-shot of the perpetrator into my nightly dark sky 🧐
Still, there’s always an opportunity to learn, so I tried lucky imaging again, but this time in RAW16, so I could process it (wasn’t entirely lucky with RAW8 last time), and process this as a bit of a ‘mineral moon’. I wanted to see colour in the sky, so I made sure I did 🤩
Figure this: a couple of weeks ago, I was doing nebula with a planetary camera as a try-out. Now I’m doing planetary with a DSO camera. I need to get my act together 😂

What’s in the picture(s)
Moon 97%(-), slightly processed as ‘mineral’ moon - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geology_of_the_Moon
Quote: “The maria are composed predominantly of basalt, whereas the highland regions are iron-poor and composed primarily of anorthosite, a rock composed primarily of calcium-rich plagioclase feldspar.”

How it was done
Scope: TS-94EDPH APO (FL 414mm / 517mm with 0.8x corrector)
Mount: iOptron CEM70G
Camera: ASI2600MC Pro
Guiding: ZWO OAG, ZWO ASI290MM, ASIAIR Pro
Resolution: 2048x1536, drizzled to 4096x3072
Filter: Optolong L-Extreme (Yes, I know .. not for the moon)
Moon: 97%(-), Bortle 5/6 SQM 19.60
Photons:  Gain 200, 20ms 90s exp, 994 images, all stacked
Processing: Siril (slight wavelet processing), Adobe Photoshop (Mac)

What have I learned from thiS
It didn’t help that the L-extreme filter was still in the filter holder 🙄 for shooting the nebula … again. I had taken care of switching the filters before, to support nebula capturing, but forgot to switch back to a ‘normal’ UV/IR filter for the moon 🌝. Still, decent enough as a capture.
Some artefacts in the wavelet processing, but getting to grips with this.
Always difficult not to ‘over-do’ the saturation for the minerals
Haven’t figured out on how to do planetary in PixInsight yet … learning 😎

Clear Skies everybody! 🤩✨🔭
