Description

NGC3587 - Owl Nebula  - M97 (HOO)

Constellation Ursa Major / Planetary Nebula / 8,000 years old / 2,030 LY distant / almost 2 LY wide

Visually through a telescope the two darkish spots appear as an owl’s eyes peering down.

Most renditions of M97 will have a strong blue bias in the central portion.

Original post:  My data gave very similar strong Ha and OIII across the nebula’s central portion with no dominant central OIII. So in this case the darkish owl’s eyes appear in a pale yellow face surrounded by the concentric bands of expanding Ha and OIII.

Update: This version has been revised to accentuate the O3 core of the nebula.
