Description

The Spanish Dancer galaxy (NGC1566) is an intermediate spiral galaxy (somewhere between a barred spiral and non-barred spiral) in the Dorado constellation in the Southern skies. It is approximately 69 million light years from Earth. I have also included a starless image to highlight the numerous galaxies in this region of the sky, including a tiny spiral galaxy (LEDA 416409) in the bottom of the frame which I have dubbed "mini-me". I cannot find a red-shift for mini-me, but given that its size is about 1/20th of NGC1566, a very rough guess for its distance would be 1.4 billion light years.
