Description

After a 5 month wait my Teleskop-Service ONTC 10" F4 Newtonian has finally arrived. I was lucky to get a few hours of clear last night to get first light with it. I couldn't be happier with it. I knew it would be lighter than the Orion 10" due to the tube being carbon fiber instead of steel but I was still surprised at how light it actually is.

Putting the mirrors in took all of 5 minutes taking care to make sure the primary mirror was mounted evenly in the tube. The primary mirror support is quite beefy, as are the primary mirror springs. In fact I did not even have to lock the mirror down after collimation. Teleskop-Service sells upgraded primary springs that I purchased for the Orion weeks ago. They are a sound upgrade and keeps the mirror in place well but aren't as stiff as the springs that come on the ONTC. TS rubber bands the secondary mirror screws to preserve collimation when the mirror is removed for shipping. However, I still had to re-center the secondary under the focuser myself. This was a quick and easy task using a concenter eyepiece. I purchased the same Teleskop-Service GPU 1.0x coma corrector that I am currently using in the Orion and after a quick collimation with a laser and cheshire the stars are nice and round all the way to the corners of the field. There is a slight tilt most noticeable at the bottom left corner but its minimal. At least to my standard.

The 2" Feather Touch FTF2008BCR Focuser I chose is amazing. The drawtube travel is the smoothest I've ever felt even compared to the 2'5" Moonlite CSL thats on the Orion. The compression ring on the FT is also much more solid than the Moonlite. I am able to get my image train in, rotated, and flush against the collar a little more easily than on the Moonlite. This is with the focusers facing down towards the ground too. I was bummed that FT doesn't seem to offer any way to thread the image train into the focuser like Moonlite does but the compression ring system seems sound enough that I'm not worried about it. Especially since the FT lacks a built in rotation mechanism.

Installation of the Sesto Senso 2 motor was very easy and used the black shaft adapter that comes with the motor. I had to mount the motor at a big of an angle to keep the tube from blocking the power cable. The focuser also has 2 extensions between it and the base which prevents the long body of the GPU from protruding into the tube. Setting up autofocus in N.I.N.A was a piece of cake. I used the same settings as I use on the Orion (which uses the same motor). The only surprise there is that there is 0 backlash in this focuser. I do like my Moonlite and have owned more than one but I am very glad I went with the FT for this build.

This has been the easiest first light on a new telescope I've ever experienced. I was able to unpack and assemble the OTA, mount and balance it,  half cable manage, collimate, polar align, configure autofocus, and configure filter offsets in about 2.5 hours.
