Description

Located 7200 light years away in the constellation of Cephius, the open cluster NGC 7380 that this nebula surrounds was discovered by Caroline Herschel in 1787. Caroline Herschel is an astronomer of renown on her own, credited with discovering seven comets. She often worked with her elder brother, William Herschel, who is, among other things, credited with the discovery of the planet Uranus.

This narrow band image is processed using the Hubble pallette. Overall a little more than 12 hours of imaging time with my 80mm Stellarvue. They say the nebula has the appearance of a medieval wizard, but it takes better imagination than I have to see the wizard in this image.

Edit: My MAS colleague, Jeff Kraehnke, pointed out that the wizard is better seen by rotating the image. Version C shows him now, with his cloak and pointed hat.
