Description

I've started to become more and more interested in the dark parts of space, and so I couldn't resist trying to capture the most prominent dark nebula in the night sky - the Coalsack Nebula. Located about 590 LY from Earth, it is located visually just east of the southern pointer star (Acrux) of the constellation Crux (Southern Cross...that thing on the Australian and New Zealand flags). This is a ridiculously busy part of the Milky Way, and I find it fascinating that the dark nebula is blocking the dense star fields behind it, making it appear that it is simply background space. I found this challenging to process due to the sheer density of the star field and the need to preserve the dark details of the nebula itself.

I hope you enjoy!
