Description

The Gum Nebula is a massive H II region that covers about 36 degrees of sky in the constellations Vela and Puppis, and contains an interesting collection of DSOs including the Vela Supernova Remnant, Vela Pulsar, and others. The Gum Nebula also contains over 30 cometary globules, several of which are shown in this image as the dark streaks through the nebula...similar to Bok globules (such as in the Running Chicken Nebula) these areas are thought to be associated with star formation. There are also a number of smaller reflection nebulae and planetary nebulae in this image, although the PNs are likely too small to pick out in much detail.

I haven't seen too many images of this area on Astrobin, so I hope you enjoy!
