Description

Besides normally being on a galaxy shooting list during galaxy season in astrophotography, a supernova appeared in January. On January 4, 2024, Koichi Itagaki, a well-known supernova discoverer, found a new transient in NGC 4216.  It has been named SN 2024gy. It is the bright star on the left side of the galaxy spiral.  That wasn't there a few weeks ago.  It initially had a brightness of mag 16, but that has increased over the past couple of weeks to mag 13.  It is certainly obvious in the subframes as well as the integrated image.  A very bright supernova brings the target to the top of the shooting list indeed!

The Silver Streak Galaxy, NGC 4216, is a barred spiral galaxy that is part of the Virgo Cluster of galaxies.  It is located about 55 million light-years away, near the center of the cluster.  It is seen almost edge-on, with a dark dust lane cutting across the center of the disk.  The Silver Streak has a huge bulge at its center with a rich system of globular clusters estimated to number around 700.

The sheer number of galaxies visible in this image taken from my driveway is surprising.  It is framed by two very large galaxies, NGC 4222 on the top right and NGC 4206 to the bottom left.  IC 771 bottom center; IC 3066 & IC 3059 bottom right corner.  A few more unidentified.

Happy to have captured this.
