Description

"Shadowmancer" - Deep in the heart of the Namibian Great Escarpment lies the Gamsberg mountain range. Concealed in a valley amidst the Gamsberg foothills is the Rooisand Desert Ranch, named for the ancient windblown Kalahari desert sand that renders vivid red tones across its plains.

Shortly after the sun sets below the Gamsberg range, the zodiacal light blazes from the western horizon up through the ecliptic plane whilst Venus sinks below the mountains and the mighty Gum nebula takes centre stage. This is the last dance for the summer Orion spur as the austral winter begins and the rising Sagittarius arm looms mighty in the East.

The light from the ecliptic and Venus is so bright that it cast shadows across the runway and this is how the scene got its name.

This is a 49 panel panorama of the night sky shot from the far western end of the Rooisand runway on May 18th 2023 commencing at 19:56.

Shot with a Sigma Art 28mm f/1.4 DG HSM lenses and a modded Canon 6D MKII
