Description

Mu Cephei, commonly known as the Garnet Star, is one of the largest and most luminous stars known. It's named "Garnet Star" because of its deep red color, which is reminiscent of the garnet gemstone. This color is indicative of its relatively cool surface temperature. The star is nearing the end of its life and will eventually explode as a supernova.

The Elephant Trunk Nebula is a concentration of interstellar gas and dust within the larger ionized gas region IC 1396. The "trunk" portion of the nebula is a dense region of gas and dust, which appears as a dark column against the brighter background of the nebula. This region is a site of active star formation, and young stars within the trunk emit intense ultraviolet light that causes the surrounding gas to glow. The shape of the nebula, resembling an elephant's trunk, gives it its name.
