Description

The Black Eye Galaxy (also known as the "Evil Eye" , or "Sleeping Beauty" galaxy) is a complex and unusual spiral galaxy 17 million light years away. M64's distinctive characteristic is the thick band of obscuring dust which darkens its central nucleus, giving the clear impression of a massive cosmic eye. What makes M64 so odd is the fact that the gas and stars in the outer bands of the galaxy counter-rotate with respect to those in the inner area. Astronomers believe that this phenomenon is the result of a violent collision with a smaller galaxy over a billion years ago, leading to its absorption and the merging of the two galaxies.

This image was captured in late April, and is a stacked image from 100 sixty-second subexposures. I'm finally getting around to processing some data from March and April. Was hoping to get some more data, but galaxy season is flying by fast, and the weather hasn't been favorable.
