Description

A widefield view of the Christmas Tree / Cone Nebulae and surrounding star forming regions of Monoceros. Shot at the same time as my last image using my piggybacked Redcat / ASI 2600MC sat atop the Baby Q.

Also in this image is the blue reflection nebula IC447 to the far right, to the centre right an old open cluster of orange stars called Trumpler 5, plus an interesting object just below the centre of the image, NGC 2261 known as Hubble's Variable Nebula. This structure is quite comet like in appearance and does actually vary in appearance over the course of a few weeks or months! It was discovered by Edwin Hubble in 1949 - it's variability is believed to arise when dense clouds of dust near the star R Monocerotis create shadows that pass across the nebula.
