Description

NGC6164/NGC9165 are together known as the Dragon's Egg nebula, in part presumably because of its proximity to the Dragons of Ara.

Despite being somewhat overshadowed by its more famous neighbour, the Dragons Eg is certainly worth and image or two.

The Dragon's Egg an luminous O star entering the final phase of its life.  It is distinguished not only by the complex nebula immediately surrounding it, but also by the diaphanous shell of [OIII] emission further out.

By combining data at two focal lengths, drizzling and RC Astro's 'holy trinity' of BXT, NXT, and SXT, I was able to transform over 20 hours of data, some with questionable collimation, and most with bright moon, into something half-way decent.  Indeed, I was surprised by the colour I was able to get in the central nebula and the detail in the outer nebula.
